"It has been noted that nothing gets the vote out as much as initiatives (e.g., medical marijuana, etc.) placed on state ballots. That fact, coupled with the synergy that likely would flow from the advent of the so-called millennium, gives ... [the organized UFO research community] a window of opportunity to organize all states that permit of such public petitions to bring the UFO phenomena into the light of day. Along those lines, I submit the following proposed initiative." The other half of this very significant project involved an approach to MUFON for formal endorsement, and possibly, formal material support. Larry Bryant used his considerable regard within the larger research/activist community to make the case to MUFON to take a board vote. By starting out with Arizona (one of the several states with constitutionally authorized "direct initiatives"), Bletchman and his colleagues hope that the momentum of popular appeal will spread to all other states similarly empowered. The goal: to have the measure on all those states' ballots during the year 2000 election season, and to thus set the stage for the requested congressional hearings shortly after the elections. |
